The UK Student visa replaced the old Tier 4 visa and is the route most Indian students use to study at British universities. It is a points-based visa, which means you must meet specific requirements for your sponsor, course, English level and finances.
The process is mostly online, and the decision is usually based on your documents rather than a long interview. That makes accuracy and preparation especially important.
Who needs a UK Student visa?
You need this visa if you are 16 or older and plan to study a course longer than six months in the UK, or an English language course longer than eleven months. Shorter courses may fall under the visitor route. Your university must be a licensed student sponsor; you can check this on the official register of sponsors on the UK government website.
Step-by-step application
- Accept an unconditional offer from a licensed sponsor and pay any deposit the university requires.
- Receive your CAS, a reference number containing your course, fee and personal details. Check every detail carefully.
- Make sure your maintenance funds have been held in the required account for the required period.
- Apply online on the UK government website, up to six months before your course starts.
- Pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
- Book and attend a biometrics appointment at a visa application centre in India.
- Wait for a decision, then collect your passport with the entry vignette.
- Collect or activate your eVisa or residence permit details after you arrive, as instructed in your decision letter.
Documents you need
- Valid passport.
- CAS reference number from your university.
- Proof of funds for tuition (any balance unpaid) and living costs.
- English test results, if your university requires a Secure English Language Test.
- Academic documents listed on your CAS.
- Tuberculosis test certificate from an approved clinic in India.
- ATAS certificate, if your course is in a sensitive science or technology subject.
- Parental consent letter, if you are under 18.

Funds and the 28-day rule
You must show money to cover any unpaid first-year tuition plus living costs for up to nine months. The living cost amount is higher for London than for the rest of the UK. The money must usually be held for at least 28 consecutive days, and the bank statement must be dated within 31 days of your application. Education loan sanction letters from regulated lenders are also accepted. Check the current maintenance amounts on the UK government website, as they are revised.
The IHS and the Graduate Route
The Immigration Health Surcharge gives you access to the National Health Service during your stay. It is paid upfront for the full length of your visa as part of the application.
After completing an eligible degree, you may be able to apply for the Graduate Route, which lets you stay and work or look for work in the UK for a set period without a sponsor. The length of the Graduate Route and its conditions have been under review, so check the latest rules before you plan around it.
Credibility interview
Some applicants are asked to attend a short credibility interview, usually by video. The officer checks your understanding of your course, your university, your finances and your plans. Prepare simple, honest answers and know your CAS details.
Common mistakes
- Funds dropping below the required amount during the 28-day period.
- Bank statements that are older than 31 days at the time of application.
- Spelling or date errors in the CAS that are not corrected before applying.
- Forgetting the TB test certificate.
Always verify: Visa rules, fees and processing times change often. Always check the official embassy or government website before applying, and never submit false documents.
