Germany attracts Indian students with low or no tuition at public universities, strong engineering and technology programs and good job prospects after graduation. To study there for more than 90 days, you need a national (D) visa for study purposes.
The German process has a few unique requirements, especially the APS certificate and the blocked account. Appointments at the German missions in India can be in high demand, so plan early.
Who needs a German student visa?
All Indian citizens planning to study in Germany for more than three months need a national visa before travelling. If you have not yet received admission, a student applicant visa may allow you to enter Germany to complete the admission process. Once in Germany, you convert your visa into a residence permit for study at the local foreigners’ authority (Ausländerbehörde).
Step-by-step process
- Apply to German universities, directly or through uni-assist, and obtain an admission letter.
- Apply for APS certification from the Academic Evaluation Centre in India; start this early as it takes time.
- Open a blocked account with an approved provider and deposit the required annual amount.
- Arrange health insurance valid for your stay.
- Complete the visa application form, using the official online portal where required.
- Book and attend your appointment at the German mission or its visa application partner.
- Wait for the decision and collect your passport with the visa.
- After arriving, register your address (Anmeldung) and apply for your residence permit.

Documents checklist
- Valid passport and recent biometric photographs.

- APS certificate.
- Blocked account confirmation or other accepted proof of finances.
- Health insurance confirmation.
- Academic certificates and transcripts.

The blocked account
A blocked account (Sperrkonto) proves you can support yourself in Germany. You deposit a full year of living costs before applying, and after you arrive you can withdraw only a fixed monthly amount. The required annual amount is set by the German government and increases from time to time. Check the current figure on the German Missions in India website. Alternatives such as a formal obligation letter from a sponsor in Germany or a scholarship award are also accepted in some cases.
APS certification
The Akademische Prüfstelle (APS) verifies the authenticity of Indian academic documents. It is mandatory for Indian students applying for a German student visa, and some universities ask for it during admission as well. Apply as soon as you have your final marks, because processing can take several weeks.
Interview and credibility tips
- Know your course structure, modules and why it fits your background.
- Explain why Germany and this university, not only the low tuition.
- Learn some basic German; it shows commitment and helps daily life.
- Keep all document copies in the order listed in the mission’s checklist.
Common mistakes
The most frequent problems are waiting too long for APS, incomplete document sets and motivation letters that do not match the course. Students also sometimes underestimate the time needed to get an appointment. Book as soon as you are eligible.
Always verify: Visa rules, fees and processing times change often. Always check the official embassy or government website before applying, and never submit false documents.
