US Tourist Visa (B1/B2): Interview Tips

The B1/B2 visa is the standard US visa for business visits and tourism. B1 covers activities such as meetings, conferences and negotiating contracts, while B2 covers holidays, visiting relatives and medical treatment. Most Indians receive a combined B1/B2 visa.

Unlike many visas, the US decision rests largely on a short face-to-face interview. Your documents support you, but what you say and how clearly you say it carries great weight.

Quick answerTo get a US visitor visa you complete the DS-160 online form, pay the application fee, book biometrics and interview appointments, and attend an interview at a US embassy or consulate in India. The officer must be satisfied that you will return after a temporary visit.

Validity versus length of stay

Visa validity is the period during which you can travel to the US. It is not the same as how long you can stay. The length of each stay is decided by the US immigration officer at the port of entry and recorded electronically. Overstaying, even by a few days, can cause serious problems for future applications.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Complete the DS-160 form online, upload a compliant photo and note your confirmation number.
  2. Create a profile on the official appointment website and pay the visa fee.
  3. Book two appointments: one at the visa application centre for fingerprints and photo, and one for the interview at the embassy or consulate.
  4. Attend your biometrics appointment.
  5. Attend the interview with your passport, DS-160 confirmation and supporting documents.
  6. If approved, your passport is returned with the visa through the designated collection process.

Waiting times for interview appointments in India can be long, so plan well ahead. Some applicants renewing a visa may qualify for interview waiver processing; check the current eligibility on the official website.

Document checklist

  • Valid passport and all old passports
  • DS-160 confirmation page and appointment confirmation
  • Recent photograph meeting US specifications
  • Employment letter, salary slips and income tax returns
  • Bank statements and evidence of assets
  • Invitation letter from relatives in the US, with their status documents, if visiting family
  • Conference registration or business letters for B1 travel

Understanding 214(b)

Section 214(b) of US immigration law presumes that every visitor intends to immigrate unless they show otherwise. A refusal under 214(b) means the officer was not convinced of your ties to India or the temporary nature of your trip. It is not a permanent ban, and you can reapply when your circumstances change or you can explain them better.

Ties include stable employment, a business, family responsibilities, property and previous travel to other countries with timely return.

Interview tips

Answer in short, direct sentences and be honest. Know your DS-160 answers, because the officer may compare them. Do not memorise speeches. Carry documents, but present them only if asked. Speak about your plan simply: where you are going, why, for how long and who is paying.

Common refusal reasons

  • Weak employment or financial ties to India
  • Unclear or inconsistent purpose of travel
  • Answers that differ from the DS-160
  • Close family members in the US with unclear plans
  • Previous overstays or visa violations

Always verify: Visa rules, fees and processing times change often. Always check the official embassy or government website before applying, and never submit false documents.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reapply immediately after a 214(b) refusal?

Yes, but reapplying without any change usually gives the same result. Strengthen your profile or explanation first.

Does the visa guarantee entry?

No. The officer at the US port of entry makes the final admission decision.

Can I travel on an old passport with a valid visa?

Usually yes, by carrying both the old passport with the valid visa and your new passport, but check current guidance.

Is travel insurance needed?

It is not a visa requirement, but US healthcare is very expensive, so buy a good policy.
