Almost every university abroad asks for proof of English, and most student visas do too. Choosing the right test first time saves money, stress and weeks of preparation.
The four most common tests are IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT and the Duolingo English Test. All four measure reading, writing, listening and speaking, but they differ in format, scoring and, most importantly, where they are accepted.
| Test | Format | Often used for |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | Paper or computer; speaking with a human examiner | UK, Australia, Canada, NZ, Ireland |
| PTE Academic | Computer-based, scored by AI | Australia, UK, NZ and many universities |
| TOEFL iBT | Computer-based | USA and many universities worldwide |
| Duolingo English Test | Online, taken at home | Many universities; limited for visas |
IELTS
IELTS is the most widely recognised English test. The speaking section is a face-to-face conversation with an examiner, which many students find more natural. You can choose paper-based or computer-based delivery. Results usually take a few days for the computer version.
PTE Academic
PTE is fully computer-based, including the speaking section, which you record into a microphone. Scoring is done by AI, results are usually fast, and many students find the format predictable once they have practised the question types. It is widely accepted for Australian and UK visas and by most universities.
TOEFL iBT
TOEFL is the traditional test for US universities and is accepted in many other countries. It is fully computer-based and uses academic content in every section. Check whether your visa route accepts it, as acceptance for visas varies by country.
Duolingo English Test
Duolingo is a short, adaptive test you can take from home. It is affordable and fast, and many universities accept it. However, it is not accepted for every visa, so confirm the visa requirements before relying on it.
How to decide
- List your target universities and note which tests and minimum scores each accepts.
- Check the visa requirements for your destination.
- Take a free practice test in two formats and see which suits you.
- Book a date that leaves time for a retake before application deadlines.
Preparation tips
- Practise under timed conditions.
- Record yourself speaking and listen back.
- Read academic articles daily.
- Learn the scoring criteria for writing, then practise with feedback.
Common mistakes when choosing a test
- Booking IELTS out of habit when your universities would happily accept a test format that suits you better.
- Checking only the overall score and missing the minimum band required in each section, which is often where students fall short.
- Assuming a university’s acceptance of a test means the visa authority accepts it too.
- Booking a test date so close to the deadline that a retake is impossible.
- Taking the general training version of a test when the university needs the academic one.
Who each test tends to suit
Students who speak confidently face to face often prefer IELTS. Students who type quickly and like a predictable, structured format often do well in PTE. Students applying mainly to the USA usually find TOEFL the simplest choice, and Duolingo suits students who need a fast, affordable result for universities that accept it.
Frequently asked questions
Which test is easiest?
None is objectively easiest. Many students score better in the computer-based format of PTE; others prefer IELTS speaking with a human examiner.
How long are scores valid?
Usually two years from the test date.
Can I use different tests for university and visa?
Sometimes, but it is simpler to choose one test accepted for both.
