Education loan approvals move faster when your documents are ready and complete. Lenders need to verify the student, the co-applicant and, for secured loans, the collateral.
Requirements vary by lender, but the checklist below covers what most ask for.
Student documents
- Admission or offer letter
- Fee structure from the university
- Passport, PAN and Aadhaar
- Academic records and test scores
- Photographs
Co-applicant documents
- PAN, Aadhaar and address proof
- Salary slips and Form 16, or income tax returns for self-employed applicants
- Bank statements
- Proof of relationship with the student
Collateral documents (secured loans)
- Property title documents and approved plan
- Valuation report
- Encumbrance certificate
- Fixed deposit receipts, if used
Tips
- Use consistent names and addresses across all documents.
- Get property documents checked early: they take the longest.
- Ask for a sanction letter in time for your visa application.
- Understand the disbursement process to the university.
After sanction
Once the loan is sanctioned, the lender usually pays tuition directly to the university and may release living-cost amounts to the student. Keep receipts and statements for tax benefits and visa extensions.
Documents by co-applicant type
| Co-applicant | Income documents usually asked for |
|---|---|
| Salaried | Recent salary slips, Form 16, employer ID or appointment letter, salary account statements |
| Self-employed or business owner | Income tax returns for recent years with computation, audited financials, GST registration, business bank statements |
| Farmer | Land records, proof of agricultural income and bank statements; rules vary by lender |
| Pensioner | Pension payment order and pension account statements |
From application to disbursement
- Collect and scan all documents in the checklist.
- Fill in the lender’s application form and submit KYC for the student and co-applicant.
- Lender checks credit history and may visit the co-applicant’s home or workplace.
- For secured loans, a legal and technical team verifies and values the property.
- The sanction letter is issued with the amount, rate and conditions.
- Sign the agreement, complete mortgage formalities if any, and pay processing fees.
- Submit the university’s fee invoice so the lender can release the first disbursement.
Common reasons for delay
- Low or missing credit history for the co-applicant.
- Property in the name of someone who is not a co-applicant, or held jointly with relatives who must also sign.
- Unclear property titles, unapproved construction or pending legal disputes.
- Fee structure missing from the offer letter, so the lender cannot confirm the amount.
- Different spellings of the student’s name on the passport and marksheets.
Getting the co-applicant ready
Before applying, the co-applicant should check their credit report, close or regularise any overdue payments and make sure income tax returns are filed. A clean report and steady income make a noticeable difference to approval and terms.
If the co-applicant’s income is modest, a second co-applicant or a secured loan may help. Discuss this openly with the lender at the start, rather than after a rejection, because each rejection can leave a mark on the credit report.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply before admission?
Some lenders give in-principle approval before the admission letter.
How long does approval take?
Unsecured loans can be quick; secured loans take longer because of property checks.
Who can be a co-applicant?
Usually a parent, spouse, sibling or close relative with income.
Do I need a guarantor as well?
Some lenders ask for a third-party guarantor above certain loan amounts, especially for public bank loans. Ask at the start.
